Description

The Story Creation Test measures narrative construction ability through timed written response to open-ended prompts. It evaluates the capacity to develop coherent, structured narratives with identifiable plot, character, and setting elements within a fixed time constraint.

How It Works

Three story prompts are presented sequentially. You have 10 minutes per prompt to continue the narrative. Responses are evaluated across four dimensions: creativity, coherence, engagement, and writing quality. There is no single correct response — evaluation criteria are applied to the characteristics of the narrative produced.

What Gets Measured

Creativity — degree of originality and unexpectedness in narrative direction, character, and conceptual approach relative to common response patterns.

Coherence — logical and structural consistency of plot progression, character behavior, and narrative resolution within the response.

Engagement — degree to which narrative elements including pacing, detail, and tension create sustained reader interest.

Writing quality — clarity, precision, and expressiveness of language used across the response.

Understanding Your Results

Scores vary across the four dimensions independently. High creativity with lower coherence suggests generative imaginative capacity without fully developed structural control. High coherence with lower creativity suggests competent narrative construction within conventional patterns. Declining scores across the three prompts may reflect generative fatigue under sustained timed writing demand rather than limited narrative ability overall.

Limitations

Evaluation in this category involves subjective judgment, particularly for creativity and engagement, which are assessed relative to response patterns rather than objective standards. This test measures narrative construction within a timed text-based prompt format only. It does not assess oral storytelling, visual narrative, or long-form writing ability. Results reflect performance within this specific format and should not be generalized to overall creative or communicative ability.
