N-Back Test

A continuous working memory test used in cognitive neuroscience. Letters appear one at a time — press MATCH whenever the current letter is the same as the one 2 steps back. How It Works: - A stream of 40 letters appears, one at a time - You have 2 seconds per letter - Press MATCH (or hit Spacebar) if the current letter matches the one from 2 trials ago - Don't press if it's not a match Scoring: Your score is d′ (d-prime) — the standard signal-detection measure of how well you distinguish real matches from non-matches. d′ combines hit rate and false-alarm rate into a single number. Typical human scores land between 0.5 and 4.5. Why It Matters: N-Back is the gold-standard measure of working memory updating — the ability to continuously track and refresh information in mind. It's the same skill used in mental math, following conversations, and monitoring anything that changes over time.
