Divergent Association Test

Name 10 nouns that are as different from each other as possible. That's it. A 4-minute test of verbal creativity, based on the widely studied Divergent Association Task. How It Works: You type 10 single English nouns. The more unrelated the words, the higher your score. Each pair of words is scored for semantic distance — "cat" and "dog" are close, but "cat" and "concrete" are far apart. Your score is the average pairwise distance, scaled to a 0–100 range. Rules: - Only single words in English - Only common nouns (things, objects, concepts) - No proper nouns (specific people, places, brands) - Only words from our dictionary — the system needs to know the word to score it - Think of the words on your own — don't look around the room The average score is around 78. Scores above 90 are excellent. Scores below 60 suggest your words are clustering around similar themes. Why It Matters: The DAT measures divergent thinking — the ability to generate diverse solutions to open-ended problems. It correlates with performance on the Alternative Uses Task and creative achievement in real life.
